The Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in Bhubaneswar has taken swift action following allegations of misconduct involving its staffers during protests over the death of a 20-year-old Nepali student. The incident, which unfolded on Monday, has sparked outrage among the university community and beyond.

KIIT took action after a video of two staffers went viral, showing them misbehaving with Nepali students. The university has now issued an apology and confirmed the suspension of three officials, including two hostel staffers and a security official, who were accused of misconduct during the protests.

“We are extremely appalled by the untoward incident that took place in our campus on the evening of 16th February 2025. We are also regretful of the way some of us behaved with the agitating students. We love our students and had never done any disservice to them. The comments made by two of our officers are extremely irresponsible. Although the comments are made on their personal capacity on the spur of the moment, we do not support their action,” said KIIT in an official statement.

The university’s administration expressed deep regret over the incident, which it said was not in line with its values of inclusivity and respect for all students.

We love them as much as we love the people of India and the people of the world. Additionally, we are again appealing our Nepali students to join the regular academics with immediate effect,” the institute added.
