Nagpur: Two roads- LIC-Kingsway and Vidhan Square-Shri Mohini Complex and beyond- are in such a bad condition that motorists using these busy stretches have to face untold sufferings.
These stretches that are witnessing the construction of a Y-shaped flyover around Kasturchand Park (KP) are full of potholes and potholes, putting vehicular traffic at serious risk of accidents.
TOI, which is highlighting the bad roads across the city, traveled on these roads on Thursday and found that the construction of flyovers is contributing to the traffic chaos.
The road from Jaystambh Chowk to Vidhan Chowk has been a nightmare for motorists for the past several months. The situation has become so bad that there is a traffic jam in the periphery of Ram Jhula-Mayo Hospital.
When it rains, every minute someone or the other falls in the submerged area near the Shri Mohini complex.
Sitabuldi Traffic Zone PI Amit Dolas accepted the pathetic condition of the road. “DCP (Traffic) Sarang Awadh visited the spot on Wednesday evening and expressed anguish at the uneven road. He has asked the private contractor engaged in the construction of the flyover to repair the road at the earliest.
Recently, a city-based NGO – Parivartan the Citizens Forum – put up banners to attract the attention of the city administration.
Activist and NGO secretary Dinesh Naidu said, “Due to the void of maintenance of roads under the ongoing Y-shaped flyover, people are facing difficulties for several months. The progress of the project is very slow and below the metro standards. The entire area around Kasturchand Park is in bad shape.
“What is the absence of traffic police to control traffic disturbances and reduce traffic congestion,” the NGO said.
The NGO said, “Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari is only focusing on building the flyover and is not bothered about the condition of the city’s roads which is very disappointing.”
“The mess is only because of the poor performance of the BJP in its last three terms of the ruling Nagpur Municipal Corporation. Be it roads, sanitation, water supply, encroachment or public transport, the administration has zero vision and inclination to solve the issues. Nagpur, which is the 14th largest city in the country, is certainly not in the top 50 in every parameter,” Naidu said.
According to the drivers, the construction of the flyover should be expedited. “This will help ease the traffic situation,” said Sudhir Pohane, a motorist. He further said that along with the construction of flyovers, repair of damaged roads should also be done simultaneously.
