Know here why fruits should not be eaten with food, say Ayurvedic experts

Fruits are considered an important component of a healthy diet because they reduce the risk of certain chronic diseases. From fruit salad to custard, we try to include them in our diet in some way or the other. However, according to Ayurvedic experts, it is not a healthy practice. They advise people to avoid eating fruits with their meals and after meals as it can lead to the build-up of toxins in the body which are known to be poisonous to humans. Ayurvedic experts advise people to eat fruits alone and avoid them with or after meals.

According to Ayurveda experts, fresh fruits are easier to digest than other foods. However, fruits can produce toxins if left in the stomach for longer than necessary.

Explaining the reason for abstaining from eating fruits with meals and after meals, Dr Diksha Bhavsar said that fresh fruits are considered to be lighter and easier to digest than other foods.

“When it is eaten with (or after) a heavy meal, it remains in the stomach until the heaviest food is digested. As a result, it usually stays in the stomach for a very long time, our digestive system. The juice gets “overcooked”, and begins to ferment (think a bucket of ripe fruit sitting in the sun),” she told Hindustan Times.

She said that fermentation leads to the build-up of toxins that result in digestive issues. According to him, in Ayurveda the fermented dirt is called “ama”, which are basically improperly digested food toxins.

Dr Bhavsar explained that these toxins tend to accumulate in the digestive tract and therefore affect digestion and cause indigestion, food sensitivities and inflammation in the gut.
