Panic gripped residents of Ghuni area in Kolkata’s Newtown after a couple, who had been living in a multi-storey building for the past four years, were allegedly seen running on the streets in a half-burnt condition.
According to a report published in Times Now, locals were horrified by the visuals of the couple screaming and running into the streets with their apartment burning.
The gruesome incident reportedly took place around 5 pm on Wednesday when the couple, identified as Golam Murtaza (husband) and Shakeela Sultana (wife), were at their home. When Sultana was cooking food in the kitchen, it caught fire. Her husband Murtaza immediately ran to save her. But unfortunately, both were engulfed in fire in no time.

According to locals, the couple set on fire, ran out of the building to save their lives. On the other hand, shocked at the horrific site, the residents somehow managed to douse the fire, following which the couple was immediately rushed to the RG hospital, where their condition is said to be critical as most of their body parts have been scorched, police said. said.
Meanwhile, the Echo Park Police has started investigating the case to ascertain the cause of the fire and verify whether it was indeed an accident, attempted suicide or murder.
