Kolkata port recorded strong cargo development in April-May

Kolkata, June 15 (PTI) Syima Prasad Mukarji Port (SMP), Kolkata, said on Sunday that it started on a strong note on FY 26, Cargo handling during April-May 2025 recorded an increase of 27.56 percent year on 27.56 percent, despite global geopolitical stress.

Officials said the port took over 11.252 million metric tons (MMT) of cargo over a period of two months, which was above 8.821 MMT during the same time last year.

Total cargo, Haldia Dock Complex (HDC) was responsible for 8.139 mm, while Kolkata Dock System (KDS) handled 3.113 MMT. The port said in a statement that it represents a 27.45 percent increase in HDC and 27.84 percent increase on KD.

Officials said there was a strong growth in several cargo segments at Riverin port in Kolkata.

HDC saw petroleum products, other fluids, vegetable oil, various categories of coal, fly ash and high versions of containers.

KDS also posted increased handling of ready fertilizers, pulses, food, wood, and container cargo.

In particular, HDC handled thermal coal, raw petroleum coke and 29,000 tons of iron and steel for the first time during this period.

Meanwhile, KD recorded fresh volume in cooking coal, wood and foodgrains – there are no commodities in the same months as last year.

In container traffic, the port handled 1,53,037 Teu during April-May 2025, a year ago in a period of 1,16,620 Teus to 31.23 percent from 1,16,620 Teus to 31.23 percent.

Teu means a unit equal to twenty feet. It is a standard unit of measurement that is used to determine the cargo capacity of container vessels and terminals.
