Kumaraswamy urges Congress to support JD(S) candidate in Rajya Sabha polls

A day ahead of the Rajya Sabha polls for four seats in Karnataka, JD(S) leader HD Kumaraswamy on Thursday strongly urged the Congress to support his party’s candidate to strengthen “secular forces”. In a series of tweets, the former chief minister said that to defeat the BJP, the Congress should support the JD(S), which has more votes than it.

“JD(S) has made Kupendra Reddy its first candidate in the Rajya Sabha elections. He is an entrepreneur, social worker and a progressive thinker. He is a seasoned Rajya Sabha member and all parties should support him with an open mind. Congress should fully support Kupendra Reddy to strengthen secular forces,” Kumaraswamy said.

“To defeat the BJP, the Congress must support the JD(S), which has more votes than it. There is no doubt that history and people will decide the future based on the outcome of this election result. I am sure that Hon’ble Randeep Singh Surjewala (General Secretary in charge of Karnataka, AICC) will understand this.

Talks between the Congress and the JD(S) seem to have reached an impasse to find some sort of partnership aimed at defeating the ruling BJP in the fourth seat in the Rajya Sabha elections from Karnataka, with both parties firmly on their side. . Stand.

Kumaraswamy had offered to trade second-preference votes with the Congress, but the main opposition party made it clear to the JD(S) on Wednesday that the time has come to take on former prime minister H.D. Gowda was last elected to the Rajya Sabha with its support in June 2020.

Six candidates are in the fray in the Rajya Sabha elections for four seats in Karnataka, requiring a tough fight for the fourth seat. All three political parties in the state – BJP, Congress and JD(S) – have forced the polls, despite not having enough votes to win the fourth seat from the state assembly.

Six candidates are in the fray for the Rajya Sabha elections from the state – Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, actor-politician Jaggesh and outgoing BJP MLC Lahar Singh Siroya, former Union minister Jairam Ramesh and Congress state general secretary Mansoor Ali Khan. , and former JD(S) MP D Kupendra Reddy. Ignoring the JD(S)’s request for support, the Congress did not withdraw its second candidate Khan from the fray and issued a whip to all its MLAs to vote for the party’s candidates.

A candidate needs the support of 45 MLAs to win and depending on their strength in the assembly, the BJP can win two and the Congress one. After getting two Rajya Sabha candidates (Sitaraman and Jaggesh) elected in the assembly on their own, the BJP will be left with an additional 32 MLA votes.

After electing Jairam Ramesh, Congress will be left with 24 MLA votes, while JD(S) has only 32 MLAs, which is not enough to win a single seat. Counting of votes will take place on June 10 at 5 pm, which is after polling.

Official sources said, since there are three candidates for the fourth seat and none of them has sufficient number of votes to win, a situation may arise where the second and third preferential votes may have to be counted, if required. . There is also a view that if the preferential votes are counted and there is no agreement or cross voting between the Congress and the JD(S), the BJP may benefit.
