High in Kyrgyzstan’s Tian Shan Mountains, on the shores of one of the world’s deepest lakes, models strut and sash in outfits that mix ancient and modern. World Nomadic Fashion Fest.

The event, now in its third year, attracted designers and fashion-industry figures from nearly 20 countries to Lake Issyk-Kul to admire outfits drawing on Kyrgyzstan’s millennium-old nomadic culture.

The stiletto heels worn by some models would not be appropriate for a proper nomad, but some of their elaborate headdresses that imitated cattle horns were a take on traditional nomadic costumes. Many outfits featured curved, voluminous skirts, either elaborately patterned or in brightly colored blocks.

Along with couture, the show offered visitors the chance to see an array of skin-wood-framed tents or feel featuring nomads and brightly colored carpets.
