The decision comes in view of the difficulties being faced by taxpayers in filing tax returns due to the prevailing COVID situation as well as electric filing of various audit reports.

ITR Filing The deadline was extended twice by the Center last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Firstly, the last date was extended by two months from the normal deadline of July 31 to September 30, 2021. It was extended till December 31.
The last date for filing ITR for taxpayers was already over on December 31, 2021. However, the Finance Ministry has now extended it till March 15.
Also, the last date for submission of tax audit report and transfer pricing audit report has been extended till February 15. Earlier this deadline was 15 January 2022.
Earlier this week, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) submitted a representation to the Chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) JB Mohapatra, citing the situation of the coronavirus pandemic, in the tax audit report without penalty. Time till March 31 was sought for filing. There are frequent technical glitches in using the new IT portal.
The IT department had said that around 5.89 crore tax returns for the financial year 2020-21 had been filed on the new e-filing portal till the December 31 deadline.
Out of this, more than 46.11 lakh ITRs were filed on the last date or December 31 itself.
