Lata Mangeshkar, Dilip Kumar’s absence at Oscars angered in ‘Memoriam’

This year’s Oscars ceremony, as per tradition, had an ‘In Memoriam’ section, aimed at honoring iconic film personalities across the globe who passed away recently. According to a report in NDTV, this year’s segment honored Sidney Poitier, William Hurt, Evan Reitman, Betty White, Ned Beatty, Sally Kellerman and Dean Stockwell and veteran filmmakers Peter Bogdanovich and Richard Donner. However, the famous singer Lata Mangeshkar was missing from the memory. There was also no mention of Dilip Kumar and Bob Saget. Indian Twitter did not take pity on these absences, especially those of Lata Mangeshkar, who sent the nation into national mourning in February, and Dilip Kumar, who passed away in 2021. Lata Mangeshkar passed away at the age of 92 due to a multi-organ failure. Dilip Kumar died in Mumbai last year on 6 February in Mumbai. He was admitted to Hinduja Hospital, Khar to address medical issues related to the disease, which is often expected at the age of 98.

One Twitter user wrote, “Oscars mean nothing to Indians if they can’t pay tribute to 1. Lata Mangeshkar ji 2. Dilip Sahab.”

“Sad that many people are tweeting about #willsmithchrisrock, the fact that #Oscars even omitted mention of Latadi and Dilip Kumar… hope the Oscars see a bigger world,” said another wrote.

“Amazing world-record setting #LataMangeshkar (who passed away from covid) sang more songs for more films than all the Oscars combined combined. Still, #Oscars2022 #Inmemorium didn’t feel it appropriate to honor him even with a mention. Sometimes, I feel, colonialism is still alive…” tweeted another user.

Lata Mangeshkar was featured in the ‘In Memoriam’ segment at the British Academy of Film and Television Awards (BAFTA) Awards 2022. The annual awards show paid tribute to the late melodious Indian singer as well as Hollywood icon Sidney Poitier through a montage.
