Learning Sanskrit in Tamil Nadu is ‘disappointed’, sorry Nirmala Sitharaman

The Union Minister said that during his early schooling and going to college, learning Sanskrit was not at all easy due to the “political environment in which we lived”.

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Thursday expressed regret that learning Sanskrit is discouraged in Tamil Nadu. He said that during his early schooling and going to college, learning Sanskrit was not at all easy due to “the political climate we lived in”.

“And it is not as if I lived in a foreign country. I used to live in Tamil Nadu. Sanskrit was discouraged and I think they are discouraged even today,” said Sitaraman.

Despite this, she said that her parents insisted she found a good teacher and learned Sanskrit privately “to some extent”.

“Learning Sanskrit or learning Hindi (in Tamil Nadu) was not encouraged at all,” the minister said.

Sitharaman was speaking at a function organized by ‘Karnataka Sanskrit Vishwavidyalaya’ on the occasion of Pre-Graduate Convocation and ‘Sanskrit Week Celebrations’. He said that he is very proud to know that Karnataka as a state is promoting Sanskrit learning.

The Rajya Sabha member from Karnataka said that she was very impressed to learn that over 35,000 students across Karnataka are learning Sanskrit.

In the last seven-eight years, Sitharaman said, Narendra Modi Since becoming Prime Minister, several steps have been taken to develop, encourage and develop India’s rich and ancient language, including financial support for research projects and publications.
