Coimbatore: Forest department officials on Thursday caught a male leopard after darting it with a sedative at Ammapalayam near Thirumuruganpondi municipality in Tiruppur district.
There was a lot of drama during the capture and a large number of people from nearby villages gathered at the spot. Forest officials said the leopard would be taken away Annamalai Tiger Reserve (ATR). This is the second leopard caught by forest officials this month – the first from BK Pudur area of Coimbatore district.
Frontline employees of the forest department were camping here pongupalayam After receiving information about leopard movements in the area near Perumanallur on Wednesday. Meanwhile, employees received information from the public on Thursday morning that a leopard was found in a godown of a private apparel company at Ammapalayam near Thirumuruganpondi municipality.
Immediately, frontline personnel reached the spot and cordoned off the area to nab the leopard. Leopard attacked 66-year-old Rajendran, a security guard of a textile company. When the frontline staff tried to nab the leopard, it managed to escape from the textile company and entered an open field with thick bushes and bushes.
“We got information from the public that a stray dog has been attacked by a leopard. Immediately, we mobilized our teams. We have also deployed Veterinary Assistant Surgeon E Vijayaraghavan of Animal Husbandry Department and A Sukumar, Forest Veterinary Officer, Coimbatore Forest Division. Veterinary assistant surgeon Vijayaraghavan prepared to kill the animal with a sedative and he was standing on a building with an anti-poaching watchman. Three APWs and a forest range officer and a private security guard were attacked by the wild animal. The frontline staff stopped the leopard and kept it inside the cage.
“The male leopard was about four years old and we suspect it may have come from Bhawanisagar forest area Erode District And it traveled more than 35 km. The leopard had no external injury and will be released in the Kadamparai Reserve Forest near Valparai in Coimbatore district,” Ramasubramaniam said.
The leopard was sighted in Pappankulam village where the leopard attacked two people. It was hidden inside a maize field in the village and the forest department had kept two cages to catch the leopard. However, it attacked APW Manikandan and managed to escape from the area on Tuesday. The same leopard was spotted in Perumanallur area on Tuesday night and the forest department deployed over 70 personnel and installed 20 camera traps to keep an eye on the movement of wild animals.
