Relieve ‘writing’ stress
Reema Joyce J and Joshua Chelladurai of X4 In Action take the oath of journaling on the question of self-help measures for students to reduce stress before exams.
During a typical session by this pair, the participating students are first asked to write an answer to the question: ‘What can I do?’
Joshua says, “Say if a student is not up to date with their subjects and has very little time, we ask them to write down how they can utilize the little time. ”
From there, the student is taught how to plan their time on a daily basis through journaling.
Both noted that they are willing to provide their test-management sessions free of charge, depending on the school and the number of students who sign up for the session.

Apart from helping with exams, they present the bigger picture.
Recently, a team from Heal Foundation conducted a morale-boosting session for Class X students of Chennai High School in Teynampet. The team led by Captain (Retd) Lakshmi Natarajan, Chaitali Shroff and Deepa Aravind visited schools in Chennai falling under 600018 pincode.
Through workshops, they regularly help the students of these schools steer clear of distractions, some of which may scar them for life. Around exam time, they also address the issue of exam-induced stress. The group promotes physical exercise as a way to relieve exam-related stress. “Take those worries away with a physical workout or talk to a friend to guide you in the right direction,” Chaitali gives helpful advice to students.
It is also now common for this group to engage with the students of a school for a longer period – a case in point being the recent intervention at a Chennai school in Washermanpet, where the team interacted with teachers and parents, in addition to students.
Most of the sessions are held at no cost to schools in Chennai, and they are open to inviting more schools. For more information visit www.healfoundation.co.in. or call 9840012468

showing them the way
R Raja is a Tamil professor and in his day-to-day life, he deals with the challenges arising from a poor vision. From his school days, he managed the challenge and made a mark. When the exam season is round the corner, he visits schools in the districts to help visually impaired students appear for board exams. “The morale of the students can be boosted by giving them information about the opportunities available to them after completing their schooling. Many will be encouraged to study better and get scholarships,” says Raja, visiting faculty at Government Arts College for Men, Nandanam.
Recently, he conducted a session for 65 students of a blind school in Thanjavur. Schools in Tiruchi and Krishnagiri are next in line for Raja’s motivational sessions. They say that students studying in blind institutes in Chennai have better awareness.
For a few years now, Raja has been working to empower blind girl students by helping them get admission in colleges. He runs a hostel for them in Choolaimedu. “It is difficult for the visually impaired to make arrangements for accommodation and food and this challenge discourages them to come to bigger cities for higher studies,” says Raja, adding that he currently has 35 beneficiaries. He wants more and more students to pursue a career in STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics) and requests colleges to keep an open mind about admitting the disabled to STEM courses.
