Pelosi’s visit

US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan, despite being made clear that it would be seen as a reckless act by China, was a matter of touch-and-go (page 1, “Pelosi’s Land in Taiwan, China to the US”. pulled up ”, August 3). His visit is nothing but symbolic, but at a time when there is a war involving the major powers, the world would be better off without a new round of confrontation. Aftershocks are bound to linger for a while.

The controversy over Ms Pelosi’s visit stems from the “One China” policy, which has governed US relations with Taiwan for 40 years. Perhaps, this visit will be an opportunity for Xi Jinping to capitalize on the weaknesses of the US President.

Tension between the US and China will prove costly. The good of the world is at the mercy of two or three world powers, that is a real tragedy.

It was also a pleasure to see and read a report about a team of four determined women going on to win a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games (‘Sports’ page, “Glorious Achievement by Indian Women”, 3 August). However, what cannot escape the eye is the apparent ignorance about the game of lawn bowls in India. Popular faces in the commentary studio expressed surprise at the lack of knowledge about the game, with the hope that the required features would increase. The goal of gold for Indian sports managers can be achieved only when there is a better performance of various sports across the country.
