Letter to Editor – December 14, 2021

We, on behalf of the community of defense personnel and ex-servicemen, would like to draw attention to its edition, dated 9th December, 2021, and its page 1 title, “Rawat, 12 others killed in TN helicopter crash”, which The community of defense personnel has been left disappointed and suffering.

The martyred Chief of Defense Staff, General Bipin Rawat, served in the Defense Services for more than 40 years, held various high positions and was in charge of about 20 lakh Defense Services Personnel (Combined). More importantly, General Rawat was next to the President of India, the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces. General Rawat was the recipient of many awards/decorations from the Government of India as well as abroad. The title refers to “… 12 others”, who were also martyrs, of the rank of brigadier, colonel and other junior officers, and were also in service of the defense services. All of them leave behind unhappy family members.

HinduThe national daily with a very rich heritage of journalism has been insensitive. It is the soldier who ensures our right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. It is the soldier who serves and protects the country and ensures its peace.

Assange’s rule

I remember when I was in school WikiLeaks came into the limelight. As Julian Assange uncovers the deep and dark secrets of the American establishment, his disappearance and quest for a drama-filled sanctuary inspired many investigative journalists. Now the mere prospect of them being handed over to America is a blow to Western principles of independence and accountability of the state.

New Delhi

The trial of Julian Assange on charges of espionage defies logic because he did not act as a spy for any country. The fact that his revelations have only helped people across the world to have a glimpse of how authoritarian governments across the world abuse their power/powers and indulge in crimes against humanity.
