manipur tension

One wrong cannot make another wrong right. When the country is shaken by the heinous acts being perpetrated on women, it is shocking and shameful that Bharatiya Janata Party ministers in the central government are trying to ‘justify’ Manipur incidents by pointing out atrocities against women in non-BJP ruled states (Inside Pages, “Under opposition attack on Manipur, BJP highlights crimes in Rajasthan, Bengal”, July 23). A heinous crime against women is a heinous crime, irrespective of the state in which it is committed.

That caste conflict is still plaguing the people of Manipur for more than two months now, raising doubts whether politics of hatred and personal interests is at play. The description of the young women suggests that armed deserters still had a free hand. What is more disturbing is the failure of the National Commission for Women to take necessary follow-up action.

A transition of power in the beleaguered state, a Supreme Court-monitored probe and massive deployment of army personnel will help instill confidence among the emotionally disturbed people.

The incident is a blot on democracy. While Indian culture teaches that women should be respected, the dark acts of mobocracy reflect the deeper flaws of the society.
