KL Rahul’s meteoric rise in the Indian cricket scene has been somewhat of a journey. Rahul, whose extraordinary century in the winning first Test against South Africa made a world of difference, found himself leading the side in the second encounter on Monday after Virat Kohli was ruled out due to a back spasm. The stand-in captain, who opened the batting for India after winning the toss, was the only batsman to touch the half-century mark, while Ravichandran Ashwin’s 46 helped the visiting team score 202 runs. Seeing Rahul’s rise and dominance with the bat, social media couldn’t help but congratulate the player – someone who was unsure of his place in the playing XI sometime back. Cricket commentator and Pandit Harsha Bhogle’s tweet summed up the ups and downs of Rahul’s youthful career to a great extent.
If you are KL Rahul, you must think that life is a roller-coaster…..- Harsha Bhogle (@bhogleharsha) 3 January 2022
Fans on Twitter united to praise the new skip.
KL was India’s fourth-choice opener after Rohit, Shubman and Mayank for almost five months. https://t.co/qrXd9RAe6c He is the captain of India, it just shows that opportunities present themselves if you are willing to work hard and improve yourself on a consistent basis- Ankit Kumar (@ankitkumar388) 3 January 2022
If KL doesn’t play in ODIs, he literally has to follow 3 different approaches in 3 formats. Aggression in T20s, calm in Tests and finishing ability in ODIs. With additional responsibilities as a leader, extreme mental toughness is required. Hope he succeeds.- Anshuman Nayak (@Ansuman83) 3 January 2022
Before the England tour, KL didn’t even have a sure shot in the playing XI and is now leading India.- Aditya Saha (@Adityakrsaha) 3 January 2022
A good one at that for him! This can probably happen only in India, where talent is given more priority than actual results. Where else to find a player who was struggling to make a team for a single format, is now the captain for all formats. Laugh out loud The future will laugh at this! – Yash Sreedharan (@YashasSridharan) 3 January 2022
captain, not captain, middle order, opener, dropped, keeper, what not????- Mohit Bararia (@mohitbararia17) 3 January 2022
Meanwhile, Rahul, in his first Test as captain, won the toss and decided to bat against the Proteas as India would like to seal the series in Johannesburg where they have not lost a Test. Middle-order batsman Hanuma Vihari finally found a place in the playing XI in place of skipper Virat Kohli, while Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane retained their places.
