Ahead of the 2022 assembly elections, Bollywood actor Sonu Sood on Friday “voluntarily” stepped down as Punjab’s “state icon”. Sood, known for his philanthropic efforts amid the COVID-19 pandemic, shared that the decision was taken “mutually” by him and the Election Commission. The move comes ahead of the state elections.

He took to his Twitter handle and wrote, “Like all good things, this journey too has come to an end. I have voluntarily stepped down as the State Icon of Punjab. This decision is mutually agreed upon by me and the Election Commission.” The family members are contesting the Punjab Assembly elections. I wish them all the best for their future endeavours.”

Earlier today, the Election Commission took to Twitter to announce that it has withdrawn the 48-year-old actor’s appointment as the state icon of Punjab. He had said in November that his sister Malvika Sood would contest the upcoming Punjab elections. The decision was taken after their tireless work during the entire lockdown to help migrant workers across the country reach home safely.

Apart from this he also donated food, shelter and PPE kits to the needy people. In November, the actor had said that his sister Malvika Sood would contest the Punjab elections from Moga, but he remained silent about the party.
