LinkedIn announced on Wednesday that it has partnered with a United Nations entity called United Nations Women. As part of this partnership, LinkedIn will invest Rs 3.88 crore in a three-year regional partnership with UN Women. Dedicated to gender equality, the partnership aims to advance women’s economic empowerment.
A disproportionate number of women do not have basic access to the Internet. Addressing gender-responsive technology policy making is critical in the Asia-Pacific region, with 54.6 percent of men having access to the Internet compared to 41.3 percent of women. This represents a 32 percent gender gap. According to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), between 2013 and 2017, the gender gap in Asia increased from 17 percent to 24 percent. Women and girls often do not have equal access to education, or the type of education, as men and boys do. In fact, the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 has only widened the opportunity gap for women and girls in the past two years.
With this partnership, LinkedIn and UN Women will work together to close the digital divide between men and women. LinkedIn, in its press release, claimed that the project will be launched as a pilot-project in Maharashtra to develop digital, soft and employability skills for over 2,000 women.
This program will start in July 2022 and will run till October 2023. It will be held at multiple locations in Maharashtra including Mumbai, Greater Mumbai and Pune region. Women who have completed their higher education can apply for this program.
The collaboration claims to provide women with greater access to jobs and enable them to participate more fully in the formal economy, the release said.
“As more businesses and professionals recognize the rewarding impact of gender-equal workplaces, we have a unique opportunity to help women become more employable and entrepreneurial in today’s digital age. We are pleased to partner with United Nations Women to jointly work towards improving female representation and professional diversity in the region’s workforce by investing in women’s skills and economic empowerment. By bringing women closer to the right skills and resources, we aspire to create a more equitable and all-inclusive talent landscape,” said Ashutosh Gupta, India Country Manager, LinkedIn.
