Southern Railway sources said the empty Electric Multiple Units (EMUs) were being moved from the yard to the platform and were likely to proceed on the busy Beech-Tambaram route.

“Today, while placing an empty EMU rake from Shed Line to Platform 1, the rake had overtaken the buffer end of the platform and damaged Platform No. 1. The rake was empty and (there) was no passenger. No injury No, no passenger was reported on the platform. A shunter jumped off the rake and no one was injured.”

The platform shelter got damaged in the process. Brake failure is said to be the cause of the incident.

Trains from other platforms at Chennai Beach will continue to run normally, it said, adding that platform number 1 will also be restored for traffic in a few hours.
