Relief to families struggling with crisis high inflation including record LPG prices, Government has announced to give LPG subsidy 12 cylinders a year to the poor. With this announcement another decision was taken to cut taxes on the prices of petrol and diesel. Here are the details about who will get the LPG subsidy and how much:
LPG Subsidy Announcement: Latest Price of One Cylinder
In a tweet on Saturday, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said, “We will give a subsidy of Rs 200 per gas cylinder (up to 12 cylinders) to over nine crore beneficiaries of Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana. This will help our mothers and sisters. Revenue of Rs 6,100 crore will be affected.
At present, all the users including the beneficiaries of Ujjwala Yojana buy LPG cylinders at the market rate after the subsidy stops in June 2020. The cost of a 14.2 kg LPG cylinder in the national capital is Rs 1,003. Now, after the latest government decision, for the beneficiaries of Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, a subsidy of Rs 200 per cylinder will be directly deposited into their bank accounts and the effective price for them will be Rs 803 per 14.2 kg cylinder.
What is Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY)? eligibility, benefits
In May 2016, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas launched PMUY as a flagship scheme with an aim to provide clean cooking fuels such as LPG to rural and underprivileged households, who otherwise use conventional cooking fuels such as firewood, were using coal and Cow dung cakes. The use of traditional cooking fuel has had a detrimental effect on the health of rural women as well as on the environment.
According to the PMUY website, around 9.17 crore LPG connections have been issued under this scheme till April 25.
The people eligible to get LPG connection under Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana include adult women belonging to SC families, ST families, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Rural), Most Backward Classes, Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY), tea and former tea gardens . Tribes, forest dwellers, people living in islands and river islands, SECC families (AHL TIN), poor families according to the 14 point declaration. Applicant’s age should be 18 years. There should not be any other LPG connection in the same household.
Cash assistance for PMUY connection is provided by the Government of India. Both the first LPG refill and stove (hotplate) will be provided free of cost to all PMUY beneficiaries along with their deposit free connections by the Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs).
