Idukki:
In a suspected case of infanticide, a migrant couple allegedly strangulated their child born out of wedlock to death in this upscale district of Kerala recently, police said on Friday.
The news of the murder was received in the early hours of May 7 at an estate at Shantipuram in Kumbumettu, near here.
Police said the child was born to a couple hailing from Madhya Pradesh, who were in a relationship for some time and were living together as estate workers.
Police said that a man of about 23 years has been arrested in connection with the child’s death.
The woman, the child’s mother, is undergoing treatment at a local hospital and is under police surveillance, he said.
A police officer told PTI-language, “The child is said to have been born at 12.30 o’clock in the day.” The owner of the house where he was staying came to know about his birth and death at 6.30 am.
The owner had seen the couple crying after saying that their newborn boy was found motionless after his birth.
“However, during the postmortem, the doctor found that the child was strangulated to death soon after birth,” the officer said.
Police said that during interrogation the man confessed to his crime.
The accused have been booked under various sections of the IPC including murder.
Police said that the woman under treatment would be taken into custody soon.
