Madurai needs ₹500 cr to complete projects: CPI(M)

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has demanded the state government to allot Rs 500 crore to the Madurai Corporation for city administration to expedite various development works on a war footing. A resolution to this effect was passed in the two-day 23rd Madurai Urban District Unit Conference that concluded here on Sunday.

Former corporator of Madurai Corporation M. Ganesan was elected the secretary of the party’s urban district unit.

The resolution states that the corporation formed in 1971 was extended to 100 wards but limited revenue was affected due to administrative lapses without any industrial development and collection of limited revenue. Stating that the corporation was also struggling to pay its employees, the meeting said that the urban local body could not complete its infrastructure projects.

The state government should give more money, as in Kerala, Karnataka and West Bengal where governments were transferring about 30% to 40% of the states’ revenue with local bodies. Emphasizing on improving the tourism infrastructure in the district, a demand was made to set up a zoological park at the foothills of Alagarcoil. It said that boating facilities can be started in large irrigation tanks like Thenkal, Madakulam and Selur and walker parks can be built around other large tanks.

The newly annexed 28 wards should get basic amenities and the roads in the city should be repaired at the earliest so that they are safe for the people.

Scan and ECG facility should be made available in all 31 urban primary health centers and vacant posts of medical officers and other employees should be filled.

Efforts should be made to stop the atrocities on SC/ST people and strict action should be taken against the perpetrators of crimes.

metro rail

Other proposals include a metro rail for Madurai, additional railway facilities, additional buses with free travel facility for women and a demand for prevention of crime against women.

Party leaders MNS Venkataraman, A. Lesser, K. Kanagaraj, Madhukur Ramalingam, Su. Venkatesan and S Swaminathan were present.
