Surat: One person wanted for smuggling red sandalwood worth over Rs 1.8 crore Maharashtra Police said on Saturday that the arrest has been made from Surat city.
Based on a tip-off, a team of Crime Branch of Surat Police arrested Afzali. MemonSaid an official, who was allegedly involved in smuggling of red sandalwood in Maharashtra’s Raigad district and was absconding for the last one-and-a-half years.
He said that Memon used to work in a cloth market and he confessed his involvement in the matter.
In September 2020, an FIR was registered against Memon and others under section 379 (theft) and other relevant provisions at Neral police station in Raigad district of Maharashtra. Indian Penal Code and the Indian Forest Act, the official said.
The Raigad police had registered an FIR after confiscating red sandalwood worth Rs 1.88 crore kept in a field. The official said that Memon has been handed over to the Maharashtra Police. PTI
