Fee Regulatory Authority (FRA) has announced reduction in annual tuition for MBBS program at Prakash Institute of Medical Sciences, Sangli. The deduction of over 40 per cent, as reported by TOI, reduces the college’s MBBS tuition fee from Rs 8.4 lakh to Rs 4.8 lakh. The FRA determined the fee amount using the medical college expense documents from the previous year.
Based on sufficient documentation, the Institute may request a review. While most private medical colleges in the state requested an increase in the annual fee, the FRA has instead allowed a reasonable increase based on the institutions’ expenses – and in one instance, even a decrease.
In order to help the students during the upcoming admission session, the officials fixed the fees of both undergraduate and postgraduate medical college in successive meetings last week.
Several private medical colleges in the state have seen a hike in fees ranging from Rs 50,000 to Rs 1.5 lakh. However, there were six colleges in the state, namely MIMER of Talegaon, MIMSR of Latur, Ashwini Medical College in Solapur, SMBT College in Nashik, Walawalkar College of Chiplun and IMSR of GILU in Jalna, which decided to increase their tuition this year. These colleges continued with their fees from the previous academic year.
FRA Chairman and a retired High Court Justice Vijay Lakhichand Achalia said the increase was considered marginal based on the fees collected by the colleges from NRI students. He said that on the basis of sufficient evidence, the colleges can request for reconsideration.
The National Medical Commission (NMC) had issued instructions in February this year that private and deemed medical institutions will have to pay 50% of their seats at the same fees as government medical colleges, the implementation of which will start in the academic year 2022-23.
This decision was opposed by many private colleges of the country. Private medical colleges in Tamil Nadu challenged this decision in the Madras High Court. Many medical colleges had approached the Supreme Court challenging the decision of the NMC Fee Memorandum.
