As per the report of National Achievement Survey (NAS), Maharashtra, their level of understanding is falling as students move towards higher classes. Furthermore, a comparison between government and private schools shows that the latter has a better performance in the higher classes. According to experts, this raises questions on the quality or standards of education in Maharashtra’s government schools, especially in the higher classes.
The performance of Class III students in government schools was 66.33 percent while it was 55.44 percent in private schools. However, their performance fell to 55 percent (Class 5), 39 percent (Class 8) and 32.6 percent (Class 10) respectively with each senior category. At the same time, in case of private schools, the performance of students in classes 5, 8 and 10 was 51.44 percent, 44.74 percent and 41.66 percent respectively.
“It shows poor teaching or education standards in government schools of Maharashtra. As children move into higher classes, it should be important to intervene and understand what is going wrong. The drop from class 3 to 10 – from 66.33 per cent to 32.6 per cent – is sharp,” said a teacher from a private school in the city. Another teacher said, “Private schools have been preferred by parents for many years and this is because of the better quality of education. The comparison shown in the recent NAS report proves it.”
Mumbai School Principals Association spokesperson Pandurang Kengar said the figures are a reflection of the overall academic environment. “The most important factor to compare here is the involvement of parents in the learning process of their children. Parents from private schools, given their educational and socio-economic backgrounds, are involved in the schooling process of their children. are. more aware and involved. It also keeps schools and teachers on their toes, whereas government schools seem to be lacking in this aspect.
