Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday said that beating up the audience for watching the historical Marathi film ‘Har Har Mahadev’ will not be tolerated and action will be taken against those involved in such incidents.
Fadnavis’s statement came after the screening of the film was stalled in Pune and Thane on Monday over the issue of ‘tampering with history’.
In Pune city, the show was disrupted by members of a Maratha outfit, while in Thane, NCP leader and former minister Jitendra Awhad allegedly led activists to stop the night screening of the film at a multiplex.
Fadnavis told reporters here that people could have expressed their protest in a democratic way.
“Entering a cinema hall and beating up moviegoers will not be tolerated. Action will be taken against (alleged) criminals,” the state home minister said.
“People are allowed to register their protest in a democratic manner. I have not seen the film and I am not aware of the controversy.”
Reacting to the aggressive display of protest by the NCP, BJP’s Maharashtra women’s wing chief Chitra Wagh said, “If Awhad has not realized that she is no longer in power, the law should make her realize it.” NCP leader Awhad took a group of party workers to a multiplex for the screening of the film and disrupted the show.
A video of the incident shows Awhad’s supporters and some of the filmmakers fighting and arguing.
