Mumbai Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) has said that people above the age of 75 years can travel free of cost in its buses from Friday.
A release by MSRTC quoted Shekhar Channe, vice-chairman and general manager of the state-run transport undertaking, as saying that those eligible for this free travel scheme would get a fare refund if they had booked their tickets before August 26.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde tweeted about the scheme on Friday. The tweet read, ‘Today certificates of free travel scheme from ST to senior citizens of the state above 75 years of age were distributed. On the occasion of Amrit Mahotsav of the country, about 1.5 lakh senior citizens of the state will get the benefit of free travel scheme by state transport buses for senior citizens above the age of 75 years. It said that people between the age of 65 to 75 years will get 50% discount on ticket fares of bus services on select routes operated by the undertaking.
The free travel facility can be availed by showing identity documents like Aadhar card, PAN card, driving license, voter card etc., the release said. It also states that this facility is not available for city buses of MSRTC and will be for travel within the state limits.
The new facility was announced by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in the state assembly a few days back.
MSRTC has a fleet of over 16,000 buses and used to ferry around 65 lakh passengers per day before the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic in March 2020.
