The Maharashtra government on Monday announced that it will set up a cyber intelligence unit and appoint private agencies to monitor the techniques used by scamsters to defraud citizens.

Law and Judiciary Minister Devendra Fadnavis told the Maharashtra Legislative Council that there has been an increase in cyber crimes recently, and added that they were looking to outsource the entire technological process to prevent cybercrime as criminals use advanced technology. were using.

He also said that since technology keeps changing every few years, it has become difficult for the police machinery to handle it. “Therefore, we will outsource the technology as it will help us stay one step ahead of the criminals,” Mr. Fadnavis said.

The state home minister also said that the number of matrimonial fraud cases are on the rise. He said the government would ask the Inspector General of Police to suggest measures to check fake information being given on matrimonial websites.

Mr Fadnavis said most of the mobile and computer applications used in the fraud were Chinese apps offering loans from call centers in Nepal, making it difficult for the police to act due to jurisdictional constraints. “Victims are duped by asking for their bank details in the name of registration and margin money. After this, unaccounted money is deducted from the accounts. Cyber ​​Police has deferred some such transfers worth Rs 3.5 crore.
