Maharashtra: Over 100 medical students suffer food poisoning in Nashik; 55 still in hospital, others have been discharged

These students of SMBT Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Center at Dharmagaon in Igatpuri taluka of the district complained of nausea and upset stomach on Wednesday.

Over 100 students of a campus comprising several medical colleges in Maharashtra’s Nashik suffered food poisoning and around 55 of them are still in the hospital, while others have been discharged after treatment. An official gave this information on Thursday.

These students of SMBT Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Center at Dharmagaon in Igatpuri taluka of the district complained of nausea and upset stomach on Wednesday, he said.

“Around 100-125 students felt distressed after having lunch at the facility’s canteen, following which they were admitted to the SMBT hospital on the campus. Most have been discharged. Around 50-55 students are still under observation in the hospital.

Police said that the contract to operate the canteen has been given to a private company.

An official at Vadivarhe police station put the number of students suffering from food poisoning at 89 and said the incident was being investigated as a medico-legal case (MLC).
