According to reports, in a shot in the arm for rebel Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde, 34 MLAs have written to the Governor of Maharashtra supporting the disgruntled leader till Tuesday. A day after party chief Uddhav Thackeray sacked him, leaders have said that Eknath Shinde will continue to be the leader of the Sena’s legislature party.
Shinde, who is camping in Guwahati with a section of his loyal Shiv Sena MLAs, said the orders issued by Sena chief whip Sunil Prabhu are “legally invalid” as MLA Bharat Gogawale should be appointed the party’s chief whip. Prabhu had written a letter, directing the leaders to attend the legislative party meeting at 5 pm at Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray’s house “Varsha” or face action under the anti-defection law.
“You cannot be absent from the meeting without giving a valid and sufficient reason. If you do not attend the meeting, it will be assumed that you have a clear intention to leave the party. Therefore, action will be taken against you based on the provisions to prevent anti-defection,” the letter said.
In a letter to MLAs in Shinde’s camp, it said rebel MLA Bharat Gogawale has been appointed as the party’s chief whip and is still “with the Shiv Sena”.
Sources told News18 that adding to the woes of the Shiv Sena-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government, Shinde has sought time from the governor to show the MLAs with him in Guwahati via video conference.
Shinde, who is camping in Guwahati with a section of his loyal Shiv Sena MLAs, has added two more MLAs to his camp. The MLAs reached Surat in Gujarat on Wednesday afternoon, from where they will be taken to Guwahati in Assam, where other party rebels are currently camping, PTI reported.
Shinde has claimed that he has 46 MLAs in his support. A group of rebel MLAs from Maharashtra, led by Shinde, were taken to Guwahati on Wednesday morning and escorted to a luxury hotel on the outskirts of the city amid tight security.
Shinde asserted that 40 MLAs from Maharashtra have accompanied him to Guwahati in Assam and are committed to the ‘Hindutva’ ideology of Balasaheb Thackeray. Shinde and some MLAs had arrived at the hotel in Surat late on Monday, hours after elections to the Legislative Council in which the BJP won a fifth seat despite not having enough numbers in the assembly, possibly in addition to support, due to suspected cross-voting from the ruling bloc. reason.
