Mahindra Racing’s Dilbagh Gill highlights the team’s new strategy for the upcoming season
It is one of the teams to set up on a Formula E grid and the big, electric raid is hard to miss. Yes, Mahindra Racing Team has been associated with Formula E since its inception and the team has seen its share of success as well. However, while there has been an atmosphere of excitement from time to time, the UK-headquartered Indian team has not fully realized its potential. Something, it plans to change in Season 8, starting this weekend. The team has brought in Oliver Rowland as their new driver for the upcoming season, joining Alexander Sims in the paddock. And now, Mahindra Racing is aiming to deliver a more consistent and consistent performance in the upcoming season.

With the Diriyah E-Prix scheduled for this weekend, Team Principal and CEO Dilbag Gill spoke to carandbike about the team’s strategy for Season 8. The team has a track record of being successful in the first half of the season and aims to repeat this more often in the 16-race calendar.

Gill says, “We are the only team in the championship to have got like four podiums in the first race of the season, so a good start. We are looking forward to doing that again here. Both drivers like Riyadh. Sims had two pole positions here earlier at Rowland. I think Rowland got the third-highest points of all drivers on this track, so they’re both comfortable.”
While pace hasn’t been much of an issue with Mahindra, several crashes ruined the odds of a team scoring significant points last season. The team is learning and evaluating though, Gill says. It aims to be “consistent and consistent” in Season 8.

Gill says, “We have to be consistent to continue delivering at this level that both the cars are coming up with points. And then be persistent to take it to a higher level.” “It’s essentially the mantra within the team. Well, let’s be consistent around it then and there. So it’s a lot like looking at the process trying to understand why we’re like we both cars. Couldn’t bring it home. What are the reasons for our first lap incidents? I was out on the first lap five or six times in 15 races last year.”

In addition to working with new, more experienced drivers, the team is also dealing with limited personnel in the wake of the pandemic. With a smaller crew in the paddocks and with a large portion of development happening through work-from-home schedules, Gill says the team has been more accommodating than it has been in the past year about the identification of roles and responsibilities .
“We’re very conscious about who should be in the office and who should be from home. And I think people are very self-motivated, so you can’t keep them away from the office except instructing them. In the race Everyone needs to be healthy and safe to come and perform but I think the distribution of work was done far away from the office looking at the data analysis, data analysis, reporting. The main area we have to do is simulation in the factory And the focus was on making the simulator work, and it’s going pretty smoothly. Now we have two simulators that we’ve been able to separate.”

The team has also worked on improving their Season 8, which is an evolution of the Season 7 machine. “It’s the same allotted cars as last year. But since the software is open, our main area has been around control systems. It’s basically getting around rear tire control because last year also our rear tires were heating up So we’re just working on a lot in terms of different philosophies for both longitudinal slip and lateral slip-on tires.”

The Season 8 car packs higher power at 200 kW (268 bhp) to 220 kW (295 bhp), which increases to 250 kW (335) in Attack mode. Then the pressure on the tires will be higher than ever. To counter the same, the team is working with a tire specialist from the south of Italy, who has spent a lot of time around tire modeling, which will help fine-tune the final setup on the race car.
