Make public security schemes, insurance, pension to the common man: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on 9 May three public safety schemes ,Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima YojanaPradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana and Atal Pension Yojana Bringing insurance and pension within the reach of common man.

On the occasion of the seventh anniversary of the launch of three social security schemes, he said, “The number of people who have benefited and enrolled from the above schemes in the last seven years is a testimony to their success.” These schemes were launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 9, 2015.

“Under PMJJBY, 12.76 crore persons have enrolled for life insurance since inception and families of 5,76,121 persons have received claims worth ₹11,522 crore under the scheme. The scheme has proved to be extremely useful during the pandemic for low-income families as in FY 2011, almost 50% of the claims paid were due to COVID-19 deaths,” she said.

“During the pandemic, major changes were brought in the claim settlement process for quick and easy settlement of claims and these changes are still in place for easier settlement of claims. Since the beginning of the pandemic, i.e. from April 1, 2020 to February 23, 2022, a total of 2.10 lakh claims amounting to ₹4,194.28 crore were paid with a settlement rate of 99.72%,” she said.

Similarly, since the launch of Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY), 28.37 crore persons have enrolled for accident cover and an amount of ₹ 1,930 crore has been paid for 97,227 claims, the Finance Minister said.

While Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY) offers a life insurance cover of Rs 2 lakh, PMSBY offers accidental death or total permanent disability cover of Rs 2 lakh and permanent partial disability cover of Rs 1 lakh.

“Today, even the poorest of the poor can get life insurance cover of ₹ 2 lakh under PMJJBY for less than Re 1 per day and accident insurance of ₹ 2 lakh under PMSBY for less than Re 1 per month. All citizens of 18 to A country in the 40 age group can subscribe to get pension after 60 years of age by paying a minimum of ₹42 per month,” he said.

With regard to Atal Pension Yojana (APY), he said, more than four crore people have already subscribed to the pension scheme. On the occasion, Minister of State for Finance Bhagwat K Karad urged the banks and insurance companies to continue working with the same enthusiasm and dedication till the last person is covered.

He said, “Going forward, as announced by the Prime Minister in his last Independence Day address, it will be our endeavor to ensure that every eligible person in the country is covered under these social security schemes for insurance and pension. be covered,” he said.
