‘Mamata has brought me back, dissidents should talk to her’: Rajiv Banerjee

It was at the end of January this year, when a decade-long Trinamool Congress minister shedding tears, Rajiv Banerjee went ahead of gate number one. One to submit his resignation in 2nd House of West Bengal Legislative Assembly Mamata Banerjee Pictured tightly to his chest, little did most political observers know that the same picture would pave the way for the prodigal son’s return to the party nine months later.

“Leaving Trinamool and joining BJP was a mistake. It was a mistake which I made due to some specific circumstances surrounding my political career at that time and some misunderstandings with a section of the party leaders. I have corrected that error,” Banerjee told News18 after reaching Kolkata from Agartala, where, above a public meeting platform, she accepted the Trinamool Congress flag from the party’s national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee on Sunday.

On the evening of January 31, 2021, Rajiv Banerjee and three other Trinamool turncoats – Prabir Ghoshal, Baishali Dalmiya and Rathin Chakraborty – boarded a special chartered flight from Kolkata and joined the BJP in Delhi in the presence of Home Minister Amit Shah. . Although Rajiv Banerjee was singing in dissonant voices and opposing the BJP’s political policies on social media platforms while avoiding the party’s proximity, a section of the TMC leadership in Howrah and neighboring Hooghly districts was relentlessly opposed to the leader who , apparently, faced issues of trust in his former party.

The Rajib-opposition pack was led by TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee. Kalyan’s happiness knew no bounds after Rajiv re-joined the party on Sunday. Reiterating his “corruption” jibe at the returned leader, the Serampore MP said on record that “only the top leadership can explain why a top-down corrupt leader like him was inducted back into the party”.

He said, ‘It is Mamata Banerjee who decided that I should return to the party. And though Kalyan Banerjee is entitled to his opinion, he should directly ask this question to our leader,” Rajib told News18.

“However, I will do my best to improve my relations with Kalyan Banerjee and others who oppose me,” he said with a smile.

Asked whether it would be safe to assume that from now on he would play a leading role in building the party in Tripura in the 2023 state elections, Banerjee said, “Whatever role my leader wants, I will play it. Play play.” But yes, Tripura is a familiar ground for me and I have a long association with that state.

Stating that he was “happy and relieved” to be back in the Trinamool Congress, Banerjee said he “changed his decision” to remain in the BJP as he “quickly became disillusioned with the party’s divisive politics”. Was”.
