Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh issued a clarification on Friday amid protests over his ‘resignation’. Thousands of demonstrators had blocked the lawmaker’s convoy from proceeding towards the Raj Bhavan earlier today. More than 100 people have lost their lives amid ethnic clashes in the northeastern state since May. Most recently, there was an exchange of fire between security forces and suspected rioters in Kangpokpi district on Thursday with three being being killed.
“At this crucial juncture, I wish to clarify that I will not be resigning from the post of Chief Minister,” Singh tweeted on Friday afternoon.
Earlier in the day, unconfirmed reports had claimed that the CM had typed out a resignation letter but was persuaded by his supporters to tear it up.
A PTI report quoting sources had also said that there were strong rumours in Imphal about the Chief Minister’s exit. He was reportedly contemplating resigning from the post after renewed violence in the state on Thursday that claimed three more lives and left 5 injured.
