More than 6,500 seats merged with common merit will not be considered for allotment
The admission prospects of around 6,500 plus one higher secondary students remain uncertain in view of the state government’s decision to appeal against the High Court’s decision to annul the 10% community quota seats and merge them with general merit seats. . The first allotment scheduled for August 3 will be published without merging 10% of seats with general merit seats.
The seats that will be set aside include seats in 307 aided schools – 272 schools under management other than minority/backward communities and 35 under non-community management. Setting aside such a large number of seats till the final decision of the High Court will reduce the chances of allotment of hundreds of students who were hopeful after the results of their test allotment.
The Nair Service Society (NSS) has already appealed against the High Court’s decision, which claimed that minority/backward management of aided schools were getting 20% community reservation, while further community management was getting 10%. Seats were available. Now, the small reservation they had got was also cancelled.
In schools aided under Forward Community Management, 20% of the seats for Plus One admissions come under Management Quota. Further, as per the government order, 10% of the seats were to be filled on the basis of merit by the applicants of the respective community. However, management quota seats in schools under non-community management such as trusts or societies were reduced from 30% to 20%, and 10% of seats were to be merged with general merit seats.
The non-community management had approached the court for restoration of 30% management quota. This demand was rejected by the High Court. The court also quashed 10 per cent community quota seats in schools run by Forward Community Management and ordered that these be merged with general merit seats. This order was opposed by the NSS. The government has also decided to appeal against the court’s decision. Trial allotment was conducted in general merit including 10% community quota seats.
