Maoist leader Usman arrested

The Anti-Terrorism Squad of the state police arrested Maoist leader Usman Melethil on Tuesday. He was wanted in connection with a UAPA case involving Allan Shuhaib and Thaha Fazal registered at Panthirankavu in Kozhikode in November 2019.

However, there were conflicting reports regarding the time and place of his arrest. Although police selectively leaked to the media that Usman was arrested from Pattikkad near Perinthalmanna on Tuesday, sources indicated that he was picked up on Monday from some other location.

Usman was taken to the police camp in Arekode for questioning. Many senior officers have reached the camp to interrogate him. Tribal sources said Usman was seen in Kakkadampoil, Thirunelli and Mapadi areas in recent months.

Away from Pandikkad Maoist leader CP Jaleel, who was killed by police at a resort in Wayanad, Usman was chatting with Allen and Thaha when he was picked up by the police on November 2, 2019.

The police team that nabbed Thaha and Alan from Pantheerankavu was not aware of their Maoist links. Seeing them, the police got suspicious when Usman fled and Allen started shouting slogans of Maoists. Usman was made the third accused in the case registered under the UAPA.

According to the police, several cases are going on against him in different police stations of Kozhikode and Malappuram.
