Maritime history, gender identity, feminism… in invited exhibitions and satellite shows at the Kochi Muziris Biennale-5

Don’t let the postponement of KMB-5’s main show stop you from enjoying a spread of invited exhibitions and satellite shows in Fort Kochi and Mattancherry. With over 90 artists on display in the city, a visitor to the Kochi Muziris Biennale could be forgiven for wondering who to visit. Shows housed at the Heritage Warehouse and Godowns on Market Road vary by curatorial title: ink and fire run through our veins, The Hindu Metroplus Jew Town offers a guide to some of the people in Mattancherry. Most of the exhibitions open at 10 am and close at 6 pm. They run for the entire duration of KMB-5 until April 10,2023.

sea: a boiling pot

This multi-disciplinary exhibition, curated by Riyas Komu and organized by Aaji Archives, explores Kerala’s maritime past and future and features paintings, photographs and sculptures, along with performances by poets and musicians.

community of choice

This photographic exhibition showcases the work of 10 artists from India and Wales and highlights aspects of the community they belong to. The displayed photographs ask questions such as Who am I? where do I belong? Do I belong to a community? Am I one of many? It is a collaborative project between fPhotogallery (Wales) and the Chennai Photo Biennale.

A Place at the Table: The Politics of Food, Community and Anthropology

This project explores the various nuances associated with the concept of gender and situated knowledge. Women in Kochi share their expression of gender identity in the form of a photo or video with a note through a mini installation in their kitchen. Co-produced by the public, it examines how artistic practices can contribute to personal/societal change. Curated by Tanya Abraham, various aspects of the exhibition can also be viewed online at the TAOS (The Art Outreach Society) website – taos.org.in.
