Mark Boucher to step down as head coach of South Africa after 2022 T20 World Cup

South Africa head coach Mark Boucher to step down from his role after ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia in October-November, Cricket South Africa (CSA) announced this on Monday.

Boucher has held the position since December 2019, and led the Proteas to 11 Test wins, including a memorable 2-1 series win. India At home in January.

“Mr Boucher has decided to resign to pursue other opportunities in line with his future career and personal objectives,” CSA said in a statement.

“While Cricket SA deeply regrets that Mr Boucher is unable to see the term of his contract, it respects his decision and wishes him the best of luck in his future endeavours.”

The Proteas are currently also second in the ICC World Test Championship table. In the limited-overs arena, Boucher has helped South Africa claim 12 ODI wins and 23 T20 International victories, most recently a historic 2-1 series win against England.

Their last series will be a white-ball tour of India from September 28 to October 11, before leaving for the T20 World Cup in Australia, where South Africa are pitted against Bangladesh, India and Pakistan.

The T20 World Cup will run from October 16 to November 13.

CSA Chief Executive Officer Folesi Mosecki said: “We would like to thank Mark for the time and effort he has invested in South African cricket over the past three years as head coach.

“He has helped us navigate some difficult situations after several senior players have gone through retirement and helped lay some strong foundations for the next generation of Proteas.

“We are very grateful to him for the work he has done and would like to wish him the best of luck with the next chapter of his career.”

Director of Cricket Enoch Nkwe said: “We are deeply saddened by Mark’s decision to leave us but we understand and respect his wishes. He is a Proteas legend and has done a lot for the sport in our country on the field and in the last three years, which we appreciate very much.


“They have created a good platform for South Africa to thrive in all three formats and I am sure we will see results in the T20 World Cup next month. CSA said it would announce Boucher’s successor in the coming days.
