Mastering the Drift: Understeer Vs. oversteer

Learn all about these two concepts and how to avoid them.

Every car is built differently. This means that each car has different handling, traction and dynamics. This also means that all cars are prone to understeering and oversteering. What are those concepts, you ask? We will describe them to you in detail but for now, you should know that they can really cause some serious accidents if you do not know how to deal with them. It is also true that those who understand these concepts and become experts in them can lead to drifting, which is a form of sprinting or racing. But this is not the subject of discussion here. Let us give you a detailed understanding of the concept of understeer and oversteer.

What do both mean?

Both understeering and oversteering occur when a particular set of wheels on your car loses grip on the road. When the front wheels lose grip, they cause understeer, which means you have trouble turning the car in the direction you want. When the rear tires on rear-wheel-drive vehicles lose their grip, they cause oversteer, meaning the car continues to turn in a particular direction, even when the driver did not intend to.

Understeering usually occurs on snow-covered roads or other slippery surfaces. This can also happen if the vehicle is driving at a really high speed and loses its grip on the surface. The first thing to remember when you’ve met understeering is not to toy with the steering wheel or your car could spin out of control. As far as what you need to do, start by slowly reducing the speed of your car. Take your foot off the accelerator and start braking slowly and gracefully. As your car slows down, it will start to gain traction again and this will make it easier for you to overcome any obstacles on the road.

When a car is oversteering, it is a peculiar situation where the rear end wants to overtake the front during cornering. Rear-wheel-drive cars are easy to oversteer. Simply depressing the accelerator and making a sharp turn at a corner can cause the vehicle to oversteer. The same effect can be achieved when you hit the brakes too hard in a corner or completely lock the brakes during a sharp turn. If you are in such a situation unintentionally, you should remember the process called CPR (Correct, Pause, Recover). To correct means to turn the steering wheel in the direction in which the car is sliding. The vehicle will then spin and eventually slow down or stop completely. In other words, there is a pause in rotation. After this, the rear tires will be back in grip and only then will your vehicle be able to recover from its oversteer.

Despite the fact that you know both concepts and how to overcome them, you should still be careful not to get into situations where your car may understeer or oversteer.
