Mau MLA Abbas Ansari was sentenced to two years in jail on Saturday after a special MP/MLA court found him guilty in a hate speech case linked to the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.
Ansari, son of jailed gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari, had allegedly threatened government officials during a public rally in the run-up to the elections. An FIR was lodged against him and others shortly after the remarks were made.
The court in Mau pronounced the sentence after holding Ansari guilty of delivering provocative statements aimed at intimidating officials. His brother Mansoor Ansari has also been sentenced in connection with the same case.
Ansari had contested the 2022 polls on a Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP) ticket as part of the Samajwadi Party alliance.
It remains to be seen if the verdict could trigger disqualification proceedings under the Representation of the People Act, which bars convicted lawmakers sentenced to two years or more from holding office.
Ansari is charged with sharing the dais at a rally in Mau district in 2022, where his brother allegedly threatened government officials with payback, after election results.
In March 2022, Mau Police booked the Ansari brothers under Section 171F (offence of undue influence at an election) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of Indian Penal Code after a video of the speech went viral on social media during the election campaign.
