Top officials of the Union Labor and Employment Ministry had last week said that the ministry was working on a mechanism under which the accident insurance claims of registered unorganized workers would be processed. e-shram portalWhich has seen more than 27 crore registrations so far.

A senior ministry official said that discussions are on to link the e-shram portal with the Centre’s existing accident insurance scheme Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana. The scheme will allow workers to receive Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) through e-Shramik Unique ID Number. The unique IDs on the e-shram portal are in the same chain with the Universal Account Number (UAN) of the Employees’ Provident Fund Organization (EPFO), the official said.

Another functionary said a “mechanism for settlement” of the claims was working. At the time the portal was launched in August 2021, the ministry had estimated that there are 38 crore workers in the unorganized sector in the country. According to the official of the ministry, the registrations done so far are being analyzed and a new campaign will also be planned to register more workers.

In her budget speech 2022-2023, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had announced the linking of four portals – National Career Service, e-Shram, Udyami (for those interested in starting MSMEs) and Aseem (Atmanirbhar Skilled Employer Employer Mapping). ). The Labor Ministry had announced on 20 April that the work of linking the NCS and e-Shram portals has been completed recently.

“This engagement has enabled the unorganized workers registered on e-Shram to register on NCS and seek better job opportunities through NCS. Till date, more than 26,000 e-shram beneficiaries have registered on NCS and started benefiting from this linkage,” the ministry had said in a statement.
