Meghalaya: BJP threatens to withdraw support to Konrad Sangma government ahead of assembly elections

With just five months left for the assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which shares power with the National People’s Party (NPP) in Meghalaya, has threatened to withdraw support following allegations against the Conrad Sangma government.

Further, BJP starts digging up documentary evidence on scams against the NPP-led government and if all allegations are found to be true, the party promises to send them to the Enforcement Directorate and the Central Bureau of Investigation after the NPP.

BJP’s Meghalaya in-charge M Chuba AO said, “…These people (NPP) they are running us at the cost of (BJP), it is very important that we are not running our government at the cost of them (NPP). We are also planning, let’s see within a month, what we can do to withdraw support (from the government), discussions are also going on.

On Saturday, the matter was discussed in the state BJP meeting chaired by BJP’s National General Secretary (Organisation) BL Santosh.

Elaborating further, Dr. Aao said that the decision, however, would be taken after discussion with BJP National President JP Nadda. “We can withdraw support but we will discuss it with the national president first. ,

“Once the party decides to withdraw its support, it will devise a further strategy by explaining to the people why it has withdrawn its support,” he said.

The Konrad Sangma-led government has the support of 43 MLAs, including the Speaker. Besides this, five suspended Congress MLAs are also supporting the government and taking it to 48. The opposition Trinamool Congress has 12 members. The NPP has already announced to contest the assembly elections alone.

With the BJP withdrawing support to the government, there will be no immediate threat to the government as the BJP has only two MLAs in the 60-member house.

The Sangma government is sitting comfortably, but withdrawing support will send a strong message ahead of the assembly elections.

“So as soon as these papers come, there will be ED, there will be CBI, so many central agencies will be behind them (NPP),” the state BJP chief said.

“We have already sent people to collect evidence, with evidence they (central agencies) will come without evidence, no one will come,” he said.

The AO said that party functionaries are receiving complaints of corruption against the government, but since there is no documentary evidence, the party has not been able to take any decision.

“We got the complaint but unfortunately we did not get the papers, we have to prove that so we are waiting for it, we have just started working on it. BJP has zero tolerance towards corruption, there are allegations, I have also heard from the newspaper, but we have instructed our party people that there is hope to trace the documents as we cannot level allegations.

The saffron party has been openly criticizing the Konrad Sangma-led government for alleged Saubhagya scam, illegal coal mining, MeECL, FCI rice scam, misuse of central funds from Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council and Special Grants-in-aid scheme in Garo Hills Autonomous District . Council and many others.
