For her first Met Gala appearance, representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez opted for a statement-making dress that garnered mixed reactions on social media. The Democratic congresswoman of New York attended the star-studded event in a white gown with the message “Tax the Rich” printed on the back in red — a provocative statement at an event where tickets cost $35,000 and The tables were up to $300,000, AFP reports. It was a polarizing choice of organization from a politician who had repeatedly called on billionaires to pay higher taxes and had previously courted controversy by selling sweatshirts with “Tax the Rich” on them.
The Met Gala, held at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, made a comeback on Monday after being canceled in 2020 due to the pandemic. The theme of this year’s Met Gala was ‘In America: A Lexicon of Fashion’.
While Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez – or AOC, as she is popularly known – raised eyebrows by wearing a couture gown emblazoned with the words “Tax the Rich” at an event attended by some of Hollywood’s wealthiest stars, she offered an explanation for doing so. also given.
“When we talk about supporting working families and when we talk about a fair tax code, often this conversation is happening between working and middle class people[on the Senate floor]He told reporters at the event, CNN. “I think it’s time we engage all sections in the conversation,” she said.
On social media, reactions varied from critical to supportive.
Donald Trump Jr criticized the politician for sending mixed signals with his attire while hanging out with wealthy celebrities.
what makes @AOC A big hoax:
Dress up “tax the rich” while she’s walking around with the wealthy left-wing elite or lack of masks after spending the past 18 months as one of the nation’s biggest authoritarian undercover masks? https://t.co/pE84Pjquh1

One Twitter user said, “‘Tax the rich’ AOC dress at the Met Gala… where tickets cost $30,000.”
“Tax the rich” AOC dress says…at the Met Gala…where tickets cost $30,000.

Many said it was “hypocritical” of the AOC to deliver the message at a special event for Hollywood’s biggest and richest stars.
I’m starting to think that AOC is a parody of Congresswoman.
There’s no way she thought wearing a designer “Tax the Rich” outfit would be well received with $30,000 stamps.
How stupid

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s decision to wear white may not have been accidental either. It is a color that many US Congressmen have worn in the past to associate with the suffrage movement.
Meanwhile, the AOC was not the only one who opted to make a political statement at the Met Gala 2021. Congressman Carolyn B. Maloney appeared in a dress adorned with colored stripes, each with “Equal Rights for Women”. There was also a purse with him which read ‘Ira Yes’.
With this choice of dress, he called for ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment, a constitutional amendment that would guarantee legal gender equality for women and men. “Across the country, women’s rights are under attack,” Ms Maloney wrote on Twitter. “I’ve long used fashion as a Force 4 change. As the Met Costume Institute reopens their inaugural exhibit celebrating American designers, I’m seeking ERA’s certification in order to May women be equal forever.”

The Met Gala is usually held in May, but this year it was postponed to September, in the hope that the Covid-19 restrictions would be lifted. Honorary co-chairs were Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, who turned the ceremony into a global event, designer Tom Ford, and Adam Mosseri, director of Instagram, which is sponsoring the extravaganza.
