The Udupi Regional Transport Authority (RTA) on Monday revised the fares of autorickshaws in the district to increase the minimum fare from ₹30 to ₹40 for 1.5 km before October 1.
Similarly, the fare per km has also been increased from Rs 15 to Rs 20, said an RTA notification.
It directed all autorickshaw drivers/owners in the district to mandatorily install flag meters in their vehicles and re-calibrate them by October 31, as per the new notification.
Gopalkrishna Prabhu, a resident of Udupi city, said that some autorickshaw drivers have been charging a minimum fare of Rs 40 for almost a month. He said that the rent revision is justified in the light of rising inputs and cost of living.
However, another resident, Clifford Lobo, felt that the hike was too rapid and would affect the common man. He said the minimum fare could have been kept at Rs 35 for 1.5 km and Rs 17 per km.
