Tourism Minister M. Mathivehan on Saturday presented gold loan waiver certificates to the beneficiaries of the Barali Primary Agriculture Cooperative Society here.
Rajya Sabha MP KRN Rajesh Kumar and DMK MLAs attended the program.
The minister handed over loan waiver certificates and gold ornaments pledged with the cooperative society to the beneficiaries here.
According to officials, 359 beneficiaries received loan waiver certificates and the pledged gold was returned to them. A loan of Rs 1.51 crore was waived off.
Dr. Mathivethan said that the DMK government under the leadership of Chief Minister MK Stalin is fulfilling the promises made during the assembly elections and gold loan waiver was one of the major schemes promised in the election manifesto. He said that the government has already fulfilled the promises like free travel for women and reduction in the prices of Aavin milk.
Dr. Mathivehan said that though gold loan waiver was one of the priority schemes of the government, it could not be done earlier due to the irregularities of the previous government. He said that the government wants genuine people to benefit from the exemption. Hence, it took almost five months to check the list. He said that the state government has waived off gold loans worth Rs 6,000 crore in Tamil Nadu.
