Lucknow:
Union Minister Ajay Mishra’s son Ashish, accused of crushing farmers in Uttar Pradesh, was arrested on Saturday after more than 12 hours of interrogation in Lakhimpur Kheri. Police said he was giving “abusive answers” and was not cooperating.

Here are the top 10 points of this big story:

  1. Ashish Mishra was arrested five days after he was named in a murder case. The charges against him usually warrant immediate arrest and questions have been raised as to whether he was given VIP treatment because of his father. He had also released the summon a day earlier.

  2. The UP Police DIG, who waited for three hours for Ashish Mishra to arrive yesterday, questioned Mr Mishra till late on Saturday, when he was brought through the back door, helping him avoid the media crowd.

  3. In another suspicious move, the UP Police had issued notice to Ashish Mishra under Section 160 CrPC, which deals with the presence of witnesses – not accused.

  4. Ajay Mishra had said that his son would appear today. He said that his son could not respond to the summons yesterday due to ill health. Security has been beefed up in the area ahead of the visit of the minister’s son, accused of murder.

  5. A day after the arrests were made, the Supreme Court reminded the Uttar Pradesh government that the law must take its course against “whoever is involved” amid nationwide outrage over the incident.

  6. “What message are you sending? Even under normal circumstances… Won’t the police immediately go and arrest the accused? Things are not progressing the way they should have been. It seems to be just words, not action ” Justice NV Ramana said in a scathing rebuke.

  7. Ashish Mishra has been named in the FIR lodged by the farmers, who have demanded strict action against him. The FIR states that he attended a farmers’ meeting, which was raising slogans amid peaceful black flag protest. Eight people, including four farmers, died in this incident.

  8. Though the Union minister’s son admitted that the SUV that ran over the farmers belonged to him, he maintained that he was not in it.

  9. As soon as the matter reached the Supreme Court, two people Luv Kush and Ashish Pandey were arrested on Thursday. Police said they were allegedly in the same vehicle that ran over a journalist and farmers.

  10. Denying any action under any pressure in the Lakhimpur Kheri incident, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath insisted that his government “will not arrest anyone on the basis of allegations”. Attacking the opposition leaders who rushed to meet the families affected in the incident, the Chief Minister said, “They are no goodwill ambassadors.”
