Mirza Ghalib Jayanti: Even 15 decades after his death, Mirza Asadullah Baig Khan, better known as Mirza Ghalib, still holds a proud place in the world of literature. Under the name ‘Ghalib’ he wrote ‘Sher’ or couplets which are unparalleled in breadth and quality even today and are related to many situations of our life. Born in Agra on December 27, 1797, still one of the most cited Urdu poets, who has admirers both young and old. 1. Aah should be like ‘Till the time of Umar asar… Who lives till the head of your life.
translation: A lifetime before one sigh shows its impact. Who would wait that long to see your curls heal?
2. Ishq made Ghalib useless… Varna Hum Bhi Aadmi The Kaam Ke
translation: This love has made me Ghalib, otherwise I used to be a strong man, sometimes
3. Aashiqui patience-Talab and tamanna betab… What color of the heart should I do till I become blood-e-liver?
translation: Love demands patience but lust is relentless, what to do with the heart until it is covered in blood
4. We agreed that we will not do things, but… we will be destroyed by the time we get to know about you.
translation: It is true that you will reply without delay…., but when you find out, I will not be there.
5. What happened to you Dil-e-Nadan? After all, what is the claim of this pain?
translation: Oh dear heart, what has happened to you? What is the cure for this pain?
6. We know the reality of paradise, but… to keep the heart happy, the thought of ‘Ghalib’ is good.
translation: We know the reality of Jannat O’ Ghalib…but it is a good idea to keep the heart happy.
7. We have the hope of loyalty to those who do not know what loyalty is
translation: From him, I hope for the continuation that does not know it, to my dismay
8. Ishq se health enjoys passion… It hurts to get pain medicine.
translation: Nature has found the savior of love through love… has found the cure for pain, has found pain without treatment.
9. ‘Ishq is not strong, it is that Aatish, ‘Ghalib’… Those who are not planted, and do not become extinguished.
translation: We have no control over love, it is a fire that can neither be smelled nor lit by our will.
10. It was not our fate that would have been a huge-e-yaar… If and when we were alive, it would have been waiting.
translation: I was never destined to be one with my beloved… If I had lived any longer, it would have been nothing but waiting.
