At the same time, the PM said that priority is being given to sports in the National Education Policy. “It is now in the category of science, maths or other subjects. Sports will be a dedicated subject,” the PM said.
The upcoming sports university will be set up in Salwa and Kali villages on the outskirts of Sardhana town of Meerut.
Sports University will be equipped with modern and state-of-the-art sports infrastructure which includes football, basketball, volleyball, handball and kabaddi apart from synthetic hockey ground.
It will also have a lawn tennis court, gymnasium hall, synthetic running stadium, swimming pool, a multi-purpose hall and cycling velodrome.
In addition, the university will have facilities for shooting, squash, gymnastics, weightlifting, archery, canoeing and kayaking, among others.
The university will have the capacity to train 1,080 players – 540 women and 540 men.
Before the ceremony, Prime Minister Modi offered prayers at the Augurnath temple in Meerut. He was accompanied by Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
