Monkeypox: Special surveillance in Dakshina Kannada district. details here

In view of the confirmation that a Kerala man who landed at Mangaluru airport on July 13 has had monkeypox, special surveillance is being done in Dakshina Kannada (DK) district.

The passenger, a native of Kannur in Kerala, who arrived at Mangaluru International Airport from Dubai, is now undergoing treatment at the Government Medical College, Pariyaram in Kannur district.

A 10-bed ward has been kept in reserve at the Government Wenlock Hospital in Mangaluru. monkeypox Patients as a precaution in DK.

Medical tests are being done for all the passengers coming from abroad. District Surveillance Officer Dr Jagdish said that no case of monkeypox has been reported in Dakshina Kannada so far.

Screening is being done at the airport as a precaution. He said that the possibility of rapid spread of a disease like coronavirus is very less.

Meanwhile, India reported the second confirmed monkeypox case in Kannur district today, officials from the Union Health Ministry and the National Center for Disease Control (NCDC) confirmed.

According to the Kerala Health Minister’s office, a 31-year-old male has been infected with the virus. He is being treated at Pariyaram Medical College, Kannur.

Kerala Health Minister Veena George said, “One more monkeypox has been confirmed in Kerala. A 31-year-old man from Kannur is presently undergoing treatment at Pariyaram Medical College. The patient’s health condition is said to be satisfactory.”

A multi-disciplinary central team of officers has already been deployed by the Union Health Ministry.

The minister said those in close contact with him have been kept under observation.

Earlier on July 14, India reported the first monkeypox case of a traveler from Kerala to the UAE.

The Union Health Ministry on Friday issued new guidelines for the management of monkeypox disease. The ministry listed points for the general public to avoid contracting the disease which included avoiding contact with dead or wild animals (rodents, monkeys).
