Monkeypox: Suspected case in Noida tests negative for virus

monkeypoxA suspected case of monkeypox was reported in Uttar Pradesh’s Noida, adjoining Delhi, but the patient’s laboratory results came out negative, health department officials said on Wednesday.

According to officials, the patient is a 47-year-old woman, who approached the health department on Tuesday, following which her samples were taken.

A local health official said, “The samples have been sent to Lucknow for testing, and the patient is currently in home isolation. Confirmation of monkeypox can be done only after the test results are out.”

According to officials, the woman, who lives in Greater Noida and is a schoolteacher, had fever, body aches as well as rashes for the past few days, which were similar to those displayed by monkeypox patients.

On Wednesday evening, Noida’s Chief Medical Officer Dr. Sunil Kumar Sharma said, “The lab report of the suspected case reported yesterday is now available. This is negative for monkeypox.

Monkeypox is a viral zoonosis (virus transmitted from animals to humans) with symptoms similar to those seen in the past in patients with smallpox, although it is less severe clinically.

Monkeypox is usually a self-limiting disease with symptoms lasting two to four weeks. It usually presents itself with fever, headache, rash, sore throat, cough and swollen lymph nodes.

So far, four cases of monkeypox have been reported in India, three in Kerala and one in Delhi.
